The Concordia Experience
I have had the privilege of working as the head coach for women's soccer at Concordia University since the fall of 2002. The first season was a great starting point as we finished third and played McGill in a great semi-final game which ended in a very stressful penalty shoot-out. Luckily we were able to come out on top after 9 shooters but went on to lose 2-0 to Université de Laval in the conference finals.
Since then, there have been some ups and downs in terms of results from an 8W - 3L - 3T season in 2004 to a 1W - 11L- 2T season in 2008. Through it all though, I can honestly say that coaching at Concordia has been a rewarding experience as I get to work with some great student-athletes who show it is possible to succeed on the field and in the classroom without having to lower the standards in either.
Having coached at various levels and with different teams, I can honestly say that results aside, coaching at Concordia has be truly enjoyable. It has allowed me to work with some great individuals, meet interesting colleagues and ulitmately given me the chance to be named to the coaching staff of the team that will represent Canada at the 2009 FISU games.
Much of the satisfaction that comes from coaching at Concordia comes from the great support I receive from the staff at Concordia's athletics department starting with our Athletic Director Katie Sheahan, to whom I owe much gratitude for her support and extends to everyone else who has a hand in helping myself, my coaching staff and most importantly the athletes who can enjoy what we hope is a very rewarding and challenging experience.
Ever the eternal optimist, I continue to work towards what I often refer to as " the picture in mind" of what I hope to establish with the Concordia Women's Soccer program. I look forward to the day we make it the destination of choice for many motivated student-athlete women's soccer players allowing Concordia women's soccer to challenge for top honors each and every year, while give our student-athletes a memorable experience that they can take with them for the rest of their lives and may play a small part in the development as succesful individuals.
